Play with it, take your sketch or line art, duplicate it, and jsut go to town. on playing with values, it's fun and you're already doing great, son.

It's like playing with playdough or clay, You keep cutting and softening it until you get where you wanna be. It can start out messy as fuck, then you can add and subtract as you need to.

You're getting a good idea of what to look for. Some extra advice, make a new layer above your ref image on the canvas, color it black completely, set the layer options to 'hue' instead of normal, it'll give you a grey scale that'll be easier to see the shading.
