Well the 'gritty texture' is just a surface thing

I've run the picture through a weak dust and scratches filter to remove all texture we're just left with the big shapes there, see how it doesn't read differently at the thumbnail level?

There's plenty of ways to imply texture with only hard / soft round brushes it might just take slightly longer to create them. -- I just want to stress that fundamentals triumph surface. The technique you end up with for a given piece should come from that pictures needs.

I'm using a wide mix of brushes most common ones stem from Jaime Jones' set

Don't just install them but take it as a chance to analyse the brush engine, look at what the brush does and how it behaves - what happens when you turn something on/off etc. Learning the brush editor will give you more than any brush set can (control)

Try placing the vanishing points further from one another. There's a video Feng did about perspective.for Gnomon that you can find on CGpeers if your interested. What you observe on a day to day basis is much much wider than especially for an interior. You could draw the walls further down and make a cityscape of what you've got currently.

Nah, but we're both smitten by Jaime's brushes I think
