Is Loomis only really popular because his books were free in the early days of the internet?

On a similar note, I'm not sure if I am phrasing this right but is being able to use construction to draw shit from imagination a different skill than using reference? Like, do you not need to use construction if you are drawing from a live model or should you anyway?

Basically, is drawing a person or landscape IRL a different skill than imagining it?
