this is a plate from a long dead school of art, but the method is sound for an amateur

you schematize absolute dark and light (forces you to know what's going on with the form), and then the hard part is applying anatomical knowledge to distinguish shapes and forms, and learning how to light the skin ( the classic "how to light a sphere and cylinder" for human bodies) + knowing how to do this in a pleasing way that doesn't look harmoniously wrong.
