do mostly practice with an "attempt" at a finished picture every now and then. dont get bogged down in trying to painstakingly work for weeks on the same picture, but dont practice in isolation from what you are going to apply your skill to either.

Draw a gesture first and look for an interesting pose based on this idea, add perspective and three-dimensionality per Loomis. The picture is too flat.
