When will you fags already realize that all this stale shit is fucking century old? Chinks from Artstation and anime tiddies is actual ongoing wave of modern art that's going to be taught in art history classes 500 years later.

I keep hearing people mention ruan jia, why? what's so special about him?

I know he's extremely good at art, and he's asian, but why him particularly?

There are other asian artists such as Fenghua Zhong who has a somewhat similar style (better imo) but I don't hear him getting mentioned.

>It would just be so pointless.
He spent 11 months working on this piece.

>but all the detail would be lost as soon as you size the image down
that already happens to him. you don't see any of the tiny scribbles he does on his paintings. but that's one of his techniques, super zoomed in his works look like a mess of lines, but zoomed out they form the look of realistic detail

I'm using Rockwell as just an example - his work is very blunt and his messages are to the point. There's plenty of artists out there who use their artistic talent to actually say something, but these are far and few because for most of them, the impact comes from having seen it and felt it. Advertising bucks aside, they literally have something to say and the means to say it.

RJ doesn't have anything to say because he's a coddled manchild who grew up in front of his bedroom computer. The most he can do is do vague attempts at emotion like the one attached.

Comparing RJ to Mullins is hilarious - at least Mullins tries to convey some empathy and creativity in his work rather than churning out the same three quarter portraits of anime girls and boring, unimaginative enviro art.

But keep defending his polished colorful turds if it makes you happy.

>I like it, because A: it reads(for me), and B: I like the texture in it.
I agree. The big forms read just fine. It's when I look at it closely that I realize how unhair-like it looks.

I do like some of his stuff like the pic attached, but most of his work isn't like that. He seems to have problems rendering hair and fur.

>But if I may ask, do you have an example of rendered hair that you would consider pretty solid? I'd like to learn as much as I can.

If you haven't seen Ilya Kuvshinov's work yet, you really should. It wouldn't surprise me if Ilya could imitate RJ and make it better.

that image probably played an integral role in his learning process. It was one of his last portraits that still had a slightly dirty look to it because he still didn't have the greatest handling of greys, translucency and broken color. The insanely skillful shit he can do today is most definitely a result of him just trying the very best he could possibly do, no matter how long it took him and then learn from his mistakes.

If you're unwilling to do your absolute best at your current skill level because you're afraid of polishing a "turd" every once in a while, I can assure you, you will never polish a diamond either.

>yet they dont render like that
because "that" is his style.

and btw OP, forgot to mention to spend many months on a single piece. pic related literally took Ruan Jia 11 months.
