Before I came here I thought learning to draw was just drawing whatever you want, however you want, and working out the kinks and mistakes over time.

But even since coming here I have stopped drawing completely. Every book I read seems to beat it into my head that I need to understand anything I draw down to its fucking electrons before I'm "allowed" to draw the real thing. Like before I'm even allowed to draw a person I need to draw three different extremely simplified versions first, and until I fucking reach grandmaster level with these abstract looking CSI/block men, yeah, now I am finally permitted to draw a real nose. Oh but wait, I spent 2 years learning how to draw block nose, so what the fuck? Now I have to learn how to translate block -> organic.

Whatever happened to just teaching someone how to fucking draw what they want to draw? Why can't you teach a fundamental rule or skill without jumping on this huge tangent and saying "No no no, you aren't ready for the real human skull yet. Here, draw this circle first. Draw another circle and some lines. Cool, do that for a year and come back".

I feel like drawing has been turned into an absolute chore and I simply hate doing it now. Why can't you teach 3D form with an actual ribcage? Why does it have to be a fucking oval? Not only do I have to learn how to draw a boxcage, I have to learn how to translate a boxcage to a ribcage. Why can't you just START with the ribcage and teach me the planes and shit with that?

Maybe if you draw a portrait, but for what possible reason would you start with the cross instead of representing the major mass of the head when drawing a full figure? That's like starting the torso by drawing the nipples.
