You do know Hogarth was a comic artist, right? What he did is not much different from what manga and anime illustrators do, just a different way of styling the same subject (the human figure).

Lifelike doesn't mean just photo-realistic accuracy and rendering. Every cartoon, comic and anime character is just an abstraction of what is real. A semi-nude comic figure still need to follow real life anatomy, proportions, expression, and gesture etc close enough in order for it to be convincing and lifelike. T
