Opacity and flow set to pen pressure. Flow set to around 70%. This is a good setting for blending. Keep in mind that about half of any sphere will be shadowed, depending on the view point.

No. You just need more practice. Blending shades is something you have to keep in mind. Don't be afraid to look up other artists examples for reference.
