I don't understand this way of holding the palette. Isn't it much easier and more comfortable to let it rest on your arm, as basically all professional painters do?

How do you guys prefer to manage and organize your colors and values when digital painting. Using the software's palette tool? Using the image itself as a palette? Just using the color picker to pick colors from your work?

I always end up losing track of things, so I was curious to hear how other people stay effective.

I want to learn oil painting, so I'm going to start by reading Alla Prima II by Richard Schmidt.
Currently I'm abroad and moving around quite a lot, so it's not practical yet to go and buy a bunch of paints, canvas, easel etc.

Can I still get effective practical experience using digital painting software to apply the theory from traditional painting literature?

nah not necessiarily.

it just looks like a lot because all his mixing is visible, that's pretty much what a traditional painters palette would look like. pic related (but unrealistically tidy i reckon)
