How the FUCK do I draw vegetation?

I'm not talking about tree trunks and branches. I'm talking about indicating leaves, how to clump them, when to render/when not to render, etc.
No matter how long I study forests and bushes, they all end up looking like piles of dirt with weird shapes. I don't get it.

Surely there's some anon out there who can help me+anyone else struggling!
