Either match the skill level or surpass a piece of art of my choice (which I haven't chosen yet) before the end of next year. Will probably end up with a piece that really pinpoints my weaknesses. I feel like setting a concrete goal like that will push me a lot farther than just gettin gud.

Welcome to the plateau my friend. Nothing to do but keep working and eventually things will click a bit and you'll get a little better. And always always remember, when things are at their toughest and it's uphill all the way, that tends to be right before you break out the plateau and have a little level up.
