Art is subjective, is it not? Then, for me, those artists working under another person's vision are not making art from my own perspective. Thus, the work from concept artists is not art work, is illustration work made for a greater purpose that could or could not serve the arts.
I'm not gonna dwell a lot into music because this is mainly a drawing-painting board, but even then, the music career is not a real career because...Could you tell me how many who try to make one fail? I mean, yeah, there's a lot of artists out there doing fine music, but do they live off of it? Of course not, you can look at many other musicians 'careers', they always start doing it as a side thing or go into institutes with a very low percent chance of actually living from their own art and only break even because of very rare luck or because they are actual geniuses.
Now, with painting and drawing. I draw, I paint digitally and I can color with trad pencils in what I'd like to think of a mid-tier skill (enough for /ic/ snobs I believe). I can compare both the STEM and the art world and without hesitation I can tell you one requires for your brain to properly function, one requires you to put in all your life effort into learning the thing and has factual objective consequences to your actions.
Have you ever talked to art directors? Like from videogames or movies? The guys are always talking with "I want something more like..." "That makes me feel..." "more obscure, somber" "vivid, splendid", "I want to see what you can do, I want your style, your essence". They are always talking in vague terms and because it's 'art' you can get away with results that are not precise. For example, you can produce a piece of concept and think to yourself "man, this is some piece of shit I just did" but your boss is gonna say "Oh yeah, this is amazing".

Art doesn't require your full brain capacity into it, it doesn't require for you to concentrate, it doesn't expect precise results.
