You're right to be turned off by fast-food style commission charts and low paying jobs on social media sites. They are not worth it, and there isn't really a ladder to climb as other people might suggest - at least compared to a normal illustration career. Working for business / commercial clients is much more rewarding that private clients.

>It's just that now on the internet it is hard to find places where you can get a fair price for work
It sounds like you might be interested in freelance illustration. If by 'high quality commissions', you mean real-world jobs that pay well from professional clients, then that's great. However, you'll need to shift your perspective away from this idea that you can just 'find places' on the internet that will hand you these high quality opportunities.

If you want high-quality commissions, you need to put in the effort to make the connections with high-quality commissioners to create an opportunity to yourself. In other words, art & creative directors are typically the people you want to connect with, as they are the ones who need illustrators to assign work to. Most artists will never bother to do this, because either 1.) They're too scared / nervous to do it, or 2.) They think high-paying opportunities will just passively be offered to them once they are popular enough on social media.

You need to be proactive in hunting down better opportunities for yourself. If you think there is a business or franchise that you think you could contribute illustrations to, then you can simply email the art director to express your interest in working with them, and to share your professional, standalone portfolio site. It really can be that simple - if you're good and the work is right, then they may commission you. If you do a good job, then they might turn into a repeat client and you've now created a steady source of high-quality commissions.

Sure thing. There's nothing wrong with working in adult entertainment (specifically drawn porn) and you can definitely make some money with it. But it is not a long-term viable option. It is not going to give you the foundation for a life-long career. Placing all your cards into a potential Patreon income is downright irresponsible. A real, sustainable career has opportunities and incomes drawn from a variety of sustainable sources.

>Why not both?
If you can and want to do both, go for it. I'm more specifically referring to people who see porn as the ONLY way to make a good living with art (even if they aren't super interested in it), which many people on /ic/ think. For everyone else, I think any efforts spent building a supplementary porn income could be better spent on building up a professional illustration business.

I'd really argue that you don't have be as good at drawing as you might think. With almost all fields of illustration, style is generally more important than fundamental mastery. If you're so-so at drawing but you're drawing in a stylized, unique & appealing way, you'll stand out just as much (if not more) than artist who are fundamentally better than you.

These posts are ridiculous.
1.) Are you both implying that the only alternative to porn is fantasy illustration for mobile games?
2.) Calling things 'generic' is pointless. You could say drawing porn is all about drawing 'generic sexy women', 'generic furries', etc.
3.) What you both described sounds great. Mobile games are a great source of well paid fantasy illustration jobs, and you are by no means limited to mobile games. Fantasy illustration is a niche of illustration that you can build your entire career around, and you'll develop a portfolio of work that opens up a variety of different lucrative & sustainable opportunities for yourself.

Really awful composition. There's no real focal point - just a bunch of random bits of interest awkwardly placed around the composition.

The angle of the front figures legs is ridiculous - it almost creates a tangent where the left and right legs could be interchangeable. I can't unsee how the little white strap could be their waist, and you have some bizarre extended torso connecting it to the rest of the body. The left leg is just sticking straight out in a way that is disjointed from the rest of the body. It is absolutely jarring and contributes to how 'still' and devoid of movement it seems.

Is the figure in mid-air, or stepping on that piece of machinery? It's impossible to tell because of the poor separation of space.

Is the figures arm on fire, and are they getting hit by something? Or is that fire & debris from the tank exploding in the back?

How is there an explosion large enough to send that tank flying upwards in the back, but to not affect the unarmored blue-haired woman (?) right next to it? Wouldn't she be blown the fuck out? Actually - how far away is that? There's a terrible separation between the midground and the background.
