Make sure the character is in the correct perspective. For me it helps a lot to make a box mannequin of the characters in the scene whenever I feel they don't work, like pic related. Also having the characters interact with background helps, like sitting on a bed and having the mattress and pillows bend under the characters weight, things in the foreground overlapping them etc.
