Michael Whelan is a big one. Still active as well.

Best place to start is old fantasy and /tg/ publishers.

Check out the stuff Robh Ruppel and Gerald Brom were doing for Tactical Studies Rules in the 80s and 90s.

For older stuff Heavy Metal magazine was a big one, where you had guys like Richard Corben and Juan Gimenez. DAW and TOR science fiction books from the 70s generally had good covers as well, you can find those in used bookstores for cheap all over the US.

Can't come with a whole lot of recommendations because it's not my area of expertise but my best advice for finding art resources in general is to get off /ic/, facebook and artstation and dig around in used bookstores, ebay and the amazon used book sellers for fantasy, sf and roleplaying books.
