I don't really get it, either, but some people can use it to good effect. it seems like the main point is to enhance your drawing with design rather than realism. john singer sargent seemed to use them mainly to enhance certain lines in the silhouette or to mark out the edges of forms, rather than to realistically portray anything in particular. especially in the shadow side. like picking out shapes. it probably translates over to cartoonshit similarly -- design emphasis mainly, and only secondarily to signal anything about light/shadow or form.
