1. I think your tentacles don't really look like tentacles, but like fingers or horns or something. So that's hurting them I think.
2. I think you're too uniform in your shapes. Both sides feel like they mirror each other.
3. Mike Mignola loves to draw tentacles, you could study him.

Whichever you're trying to study, eyeball it first, then after you've finished the study, copy it directly and compare. Take note whether you tend to make values to light or too dark. Maybe you have a tendency to not make shadows dark enough.
