I think it all comes down to doing something that you like and feel comfortable drawing because when you get confident in your "way-of-creating" what you really want that you will stick with it, me myself discover that my style is blending surrealism with realism like this one.

Dude, I did trace when I was younger but I realized very qiuckly that it didn't get me anywhere. So no, I don't trace but rather take inspiration and all the line work and everything else is made of observation and practice.
That is maybe also the reason why my anatomy is still shit...

But at least I know my worth and what I have spend my time doing so no need to argue, I have 0 things to prove to you and that is why I can smile knowing the truth :)
