Sure. When painting, you cant think in terms of lines, as you might when sketching. Rather you have to try to define form with just value and color. Here's a finished piece with the layers I used. If you notice, I never started with a sketch, rather I tried to block in the basic form with only the base color, and a bit of variation with value. After that I simply kept refining; adding more detail, still thinking about exactly what form each stroke was meant to define.

Here are the layers I used, Believe it or not, I only started painting about one month ago. So I'm not sure I am the best to be asking for tips, as I'm still quite new myself. The best advice I can give is to not approach painting the same way you would sketching, don't start with a sketch, but try to use only color/value to define the form.
