Is there a comments section for submissions on the horizon?

When starting to draw a figure (from life or imagination), do you draw a very rough sketch first and then make it more accurate, or do you do something like begin from some single part and/or use a basic unit to compare sizes of bodyparts? How about when drawing faces? I'm getting some slightly conflicting advice from various books and I'd like to have an insight into your techniques.
