Next time someone speaks with a professor on your behalf, be sure to call them an asshole.

Acrylic is just straight up cheeper.

Acrylic dries very quickly, so working paint into the canvas in a "blending" motion doesn't work as well, so creating fine gradients can be a bit tricky. You're also going to have to git gud at mixing colors on the fly and color matching by eye.

I've used oil fairly extensively and acrylic for the past year or so and I can say for certain that oil is physically easier to paint with. It spreads easier , blends easier and wet on wet with oil is just unmatched. That's not to say acrylic is bad, but if you're going for realism, it's going to take some practice.

As far as everything but physically applying paint to canvas, I prefer acrylic. It's non-toxic, it doesn't have nearly as dangerous fumes, you don't have to fuck with solvents for hours on end, you don't need quality ventilation, you don't need fireproof storage, you don't need rags, and you don't need etc.

Also, I like to fuck with matte mediums and they works pretty well with a mars black in acrylic.

Also, oil is good and I suggest everyone try as many mediums as possible.

As far as pricing and the pain of cost goes, it's generally worth the price to get quality materials to paint with. Along with being more pleasant to work with, quality paints generally have more pigment or body to them.

Get a starter kit with basic colors and just build up from there over time. you can paint in monochrome if you need to and there is no rush to get every color under the sun.

My favorite acrylic colors are Paynes gray, Van Dyke Red, and Cerulean Blue. These colors are a bit farther from a basic palette, but I recommend them for making short cuts when mixing.

Does anyone else feel uncomfortable drawing while people are watching? I always feel like people are judging my drawings.
