>So what other sake is there to draw for if not for the sake of drawing?
I would phrase it differently; to me, "drawing for the sake of drawing" means drawing without being influenced by an ulterior motive such as money, approval, improvement, etc. but many people on here seem to use it in a way with a meaning closer to "mindless, obligatory grinding".

That is not to say, however, that something created when "drawing for the sake of drawing" can't make you money or win you prizes or improve your skills. If you do a drawing of a bear in a funny little hat because fuck you I wanted to draw a bear in a funny little hat, that is "drawing for the sake of drawing" even if it ends up winning you art prizes, elevating your twitter handle to a household name and getting bought by a gallery for a gorillion dollars because none of that entered into the original equation - you just wanted to draw a bear in a funny little hat and everything else was incidental.

"Drawing for the sake of drawing" needs to be supplemented if you're going to improve, though. This doesn't mean that you have to spend eight hours grinding boxes or skellingtons, just that gitting gud means at least some amount of concentrating on gitting gud as opposed to doing what you want. It also doesn't have to be unpleasant - drawing your waifu in a cheongsam can good fun, but if you were thinking "hmm, today I'll draw my waifu in a cheongsam so I can make SS-Oberführer Hogarth proud even though drapery gives me headaches" then I would argue that you are no longer "drawing for the sake of drawing" in the strictest terms. Is there anything wrong with that? Of course not. You like doing the drawing because it's your waifu in a slinky dress and you derive a benefit because you're practicing drapery.

On top of what other people have said, changing attitudes also played a major part. Until the Renaissance, the iconoclastic attitude of Christianity severely restricted the scope of allowable artistic expression because deviating from established Christian motifs in the established styles was a big no-no. During the Renaissance, these attitudes relaxed somewhat and artists began to draw new (or re-imagined) scenes and began to research things that today underpin the entire study of graphic arts - mathematical perspective, anatomical and skeletonal studies, the platonic solids, etc. You can draw a direct line (lel) from drawabox and Vilppu to da Vinci.

I dualboot debian and win10 so that I can draw my coom art on SAI and have my tablet actually work (it does work on debian but the buttons don't). Krita isn't too bad, but I don't like it. Fuck GIMP.

I prefer a screenless tablet for this reason.

It means stop posting about wanting to learn to draw and actually draw. Of course, you need to focus on improving if you want to make progress. Find something you enjoy drawing and draw that so you can keep it up every day. Don't try to obsessively spend days polishing turds though, look at what failed in each drawing and learn from those mistakes in future drawings. I do spend a fair amount of time looking at other people's art to work out how they handle areas I stuggle in and internalise that to improve. Studies are important but honestly you shouldn't do them without sgetting me idea of what you are trying to learn from it first.

This. studying fundamentals is free, easy gains. I don't even know how someone would dedicate a mountain of time studying ONLY fundies though. Even copying, I mean studying, Loomis is studying an artstyle popular during his period.
Studying the fundies AND (insert artstyle here) is the best way to learn art unless you just want to draw medical anatomically correct soulless bodies. It's how the East AND West has been studying for centuries.
Learning how to draw isn't that hard, let alone a magical unsolved equation. The only thing hard is dedicating the hours of study needed to improve.
