Just like technical ability, taste and a sense for interesting design has to be cultivated and be developed over time.
Do you only consume generic and boring art? Then it's no wonder your stuff will be the same.
Try to find stuff that looks interesting and original to you.
If you already did, analyze what the artist do differently, what exactly sparks the interest.
And don't just look for art in your specific field. Look up architects, photographers, sculptors etc. and find what you like about something and apply it to your own work.
And don't be hesistant to use refs.
