No, but being condescending also doesn't help in creating sympathy for your viewpoint.

True. In the context of this thread, I think it means something that intrigues you somehow about a piece, you wouldn't even have to really like the image as a whole, it's enough to find one golden brick in a grey brick wall.

What you are adressing is I guess the problem of trying to be original and different but at the same time not sliding into abusing gimmicks to achieve that or being impatient and trying to force something unique for the sake of it instead of letting it develop over time.
A quote from Yves Saint Laurent comes to mind: "Fashions fade, style is eternal."
