Well, there's always the grid, but if you use that you might as well be a photocopy machine.
Work your way from more general shapes to more specific ones. Does the still life fit into one big shape (a triangle\oval\square, etc)? Does the negative space form any nice patterns? The answers to both of those questions are, most likely, yes, you just have to simplify the objects to see this.
In this pic (it's a pose, but you can treat it as a still life) you might want to start with drawing the quadrilateral I've highlighted, rather than starting with the head or torso and their spatial relationship.
