Randomly copying aspects of art I liked just didn't work for me. Advice of people who have no stake in me succeeding is only as useful as far it takes me
As a side-note - what I'm saying happens to be exactly what a lot of artist actually did when starting out, copying their favorite comics line for line, copying their masters stroke by stroke

your proportions are out of whack because you tried to construct the drawing piece by piece instead of getting the biggest shape first and delving into details as you go. De-focus your eyes and see the whote picture first. This way, even if the proportions are wrong, they are wrong the way you wanted them to be, therefore it will look more appealing
