But if you're going to discard art such as OP for being traced and a hack, you might as well discard most of the past masters making camera oscuras and other garbage like that.

The ends justify the means is more about "bringing a certain vision to existence" is more important than "doing so completely from scratch".
It is technically less impressive, of course, but people who copy portraits perfectly are good technicians and still suck at artistic merit. OP's SJW is doing something with that mindless copying and giving birth to a concept, I think there's merit in it and, to the final consumer, it doesn't really matter how it was done if it's not an inherent part of the enjoyment experience.
