Beginner painter here, but fairly decent draftsman.

First off good idea starting in grayscale. I'm at that stage myself.

I suggest you get a picture you want to reference, desaturate it, then paint it. After that, color pick and pull lines from the values on the ref to your painting. You'll notice that your value range is squished.

I'm overcoming that with this method. You just need to understand that you're not seeing properly. I'm also avoiding working with lights at all currently, and just trying to get shadows right, so the midtone is a white.

I'm not sure if this is "right", but I went from complete trash, worse than your painting, to pic related in a week or so.
