For fine artists looking to sell online I'd like to clear up a misconception about the marketplace and what it expects from you.

Buyers of fine arts are not comparing your art, at least in fine arts categories, to paintings from the past nor digital art. When buyers look on these marketplaces they are looking for oil paintings, drawing, etc. Their only point of comparison for your artwork is the other artwork currently available on the given marketplace.

If your art is the best art in a given category on that marketplace most likely yours will be purchased sooner than someone else's. It will be purchased strictly within the context of what else is available within the search engine.

Nobody will look at your painting and say "But it's not as finished or crisp as a digital image" or "This doesn't stack up against Sargent or Monet" because those paintings are not for sale where yours are. You would be within a market that consists solely of contemporary artists, and your work would be judged based on those criteria.

I think people end up confusing the broader internet for the places where art is actually sold. The general quality on most marketplaces is very low, many painters listing many low quality paintings, but the algorithms are set up to let good paintings rise above others in search results. They are self contained environments. There are no images of digital art or AI art in the categories for new oil paintings, they are not a factor in whether your work sells at all so it's pointless to compare your work to things that aren't even for sale next to yours.
