My great uncle is a very talented painter, but he's very old (note: "great" uncle). A couple of years ago, his mind started to go. He started to get to the point where he couldn't recognize people and couple remember how to do certain simple tasks.

One day last year he went to the store to get groceries and came home hours later with none. When his wife asked where the groceries were, all he could say was, "I don't know, I can't remember." He just kept getting progressively worse and events like this kept getting more common.

Through all of this, though, he remained completely lucid when painting.

Eventually, his wife couldn't take care of him and herself so they both moved into an assisted living home/nursing home. They gave him his own room to keep painting.

A few days ago, my grandmother (his wife's sister) went to visit them and they were packing up all of his art supplies. When she asked what was going on, he told her, "There's no inspiration here for me."

Sorry if this is the wrong board for this, I just thought you guys would be the only ones who could understand why this is so upsetting. I've had an interest in art for as long as I can remember, and my uncle has been one of the biggest sources of inspiration for me. It's just really hard to see this happen. I've never been one to stay up at night worrying about death and mortality, but this makes me worry about the day that I may no longer be able to make art.

Anyway, if you're still reading, thank you for letting me vent, /ic/. Now back to drawing.

what excersizes do you use to practice drawing from imagination, /ic/? I can draw pretty believably with a good reference, but take that away and i'm horseshit and I want to fix this.

the past few months I've been trying to memorize a figure/gesture for 30 seconds and then blind draw it, but I'm making literally not progress and its driving me nuts.
