Well I'm just also a /beg/ so I'm not exactly qualified to give you advice, but I think you should observe the design more, Question why the original artist put this line here, and why this line curved like this, why the proportion of x like that. You can fill the gap of not understanding the design with knowledge like anatomy or references and such, I also used to take a very long time to sketch something, like 3 hours(pic on the right) for a very barebone one. Now I just do it in a few minutes. If you draw faster you will draw more.
