I think how the light will reflect from the source desu.
If the plane is perpendicular to the light it will be brightest, if it receives none than it will be darkest.
I assume(?) the green parts would be darker than the top parts, but also lighter than the shadow because it gets affected by reflected light and such

Not bad. Jokes aside, if you want to learn shading, get your head around theory first.
Like ''How to render'' from Scott Robertson is all you need for basics, reminder that you need to have strong
understanding of perspective first, otherwise you will be confused. There are less technicall and also viable sources tho.
I just found this book groundbreaking in my career.
Also if you want to practice shading you should look for better refs, like pic rel.

If you really want to get better, go find the asaro head model on Sketchfab and study it.

The asaro head breaks down the human head into a series of simplicistic planes. All human heads, regardless of who they are or what they look like, possess these identical forms. Once you learn to understand and replicate these planes, you will be able to draw anybody.
