You know those 3D images in which you cross your eyes then refocus so they merge together?
If you place ref and drawing closer together, you can cross-eye them, if something is off you won't be able to focus on that detail, and it will appear blurry and flashing.

Try on this image, I can focus on most parts, but the upper lip flashes a lot, which means it's not perfectly aligned with the ref.
