Both and neither. Brian has his own school of thought when it comes to drawing. You go to the trouble of getting live models for reference -studying other art or using photos to find out details for something you want to draw from imagination is women's work and isn't real art. Once you have your live model or still life, look at them enough to throw some shapes down but not enough to make be accurate. Then slap some hatching across everything, ignoring the fact it doesn't match the forms on the reference at all and creates a texture that doesn't give the impression of the one the model actually has but it's right because you used **live reference** so how could it be wrong? As long as you have live reference nobody can claim you filled in gaps from your imagination or that anything is wrong with your picture even if you never looked at the reference twice. With these easy steps you too can be a silver surfacer, putting a glossy finish on amorphous blobs across the galaxy!
