This >>3553126 pretty much. A background shouldn't be such a complete afterthought or considered something that's not important - it's most definitely part of the image and will affect your (and the viewers) perception of the colors. Even something as simple as a colored background to compliment / work with the colors in the portrait would help a lot. One of the biggest benefits is that you start to create a distinct color palette for the piece instead of having it be muddy (which it is now).

Another major issue that is sort of related is that the range of values within the colors is very limited, which contributes to the timidness and muddiness and does little to help describe the form.

I attached one example of a direction this could go in to avoid muddy, bland colors. I simplified the colors / values just for the sake of illustrating how a better range of values can help create a better form.
