I got a pretty interesting bit of info on Murakami and the superflat style.Turns out the most iconic face/character from Murakami's work (the blonde girl also featured in "it Girl") is actually lifted from a figure sculptor called Ooshima Yuuki. Specifically from a tiny figure attached as an extra to a 2004 loli anthology.
I found out reading through obscure figure exhibition articles after thinking "man I know that face" when looking at the figure since I already knew superflat before that.
Wikipedia even mentions that Murakami reproduced some of the artists sculpts.
