Knowing your form and being comfortable in all lighting scenarios, and especially for lost edges, dark light. Softer and darker -> more lost, so a fur in shadow would be really lost.

Do not use line. Only fat brush.
Make an other study of a picture at the begining of this thread. Then, post one image with the three following steps :
step 1 sketch of basic shapes
step 2 add value (no blending)
step 3 refine value/edge (pic related)
We will tell you when you start to destroy your drawing. Enjoy
