if they are studies from photographs focus on getting them as exactly as possible with your level of skill, and not only to copy but to understand the underlying decisions that make you trace a line (is there a muscle underneath, bone? is the value range correct? are there any tangents here). If it's a freestyle doodle, then you should try to gear towards expressing emotions and facial expressions. For this you can definitely make weird faces in front of a mirror, try to feel how you would like something to look as and study closely. There are a couple of cartoons that are pretty good at this, once you feel confident that they don't "look so dead", study body language.
