Don't think that you have a boring wooden yellow HB pencil in your hand (even if you do) - think as if you are holding a pastel or conte crayon or you have snapped broken a piece of charcoal and are holding that.

Learn to overhand so you can utilize the side of the pencil for soft strokes and loose sketching. Use your entire arm. You can rest your palm if it feels too difficult but it's easier to hover your hand the more you have angle on your drawing surface. If you have just a flat table try putting a folder under your sketchbook to get just a slight raise in angle for your surface and it's way easier. You don't need to go full bonkers with pure overhand grip and drawing to 90 degree angle stand (even tho trying that once is not a bad idea) you just need to find that sweet spot where you can truly utilize the whole tip of your pencil and the variety of it's strokes. I'd also recommend to try drawing with big markers or conte crayons to teach you that good grip and variety.

The more you scirbble with using a writing grip on your pencil, the more you lose the feel of the drawing and make loose sketching and gesture drawing difficult. You are also prone to chicken scratching, stiff lines and many more faults when using drawing grip.
