It's not just blank space, Positive shape is the subject negative shape should be background. You have to use the realtionship to develop composition. A large subject with little negative space has a different tone than a small subject with large negative space. It's also important to keep this idea in mind so you don't over clutter or over detail background elements that may steal the shine from the subject.
