Because you could draw the coolest idea in the world; if the composition sucks, people will not be engaged.
A bad composition repels the viewer, who has to force himself to pay attention to your stuff instead of being invited by it.

In a sense, composition is like "gesture drawing", so it's not enough by itself, but think about how you have to constantly fight between gesture and construction in order to strike a balance between fluidity and good form.
