the head wasn't on right.

try to imagine the spine when drawing the neck. you can see where it begins in pic related. it's somewhere behind the ears, between the both of them.
knowing that point can make you more aware of the headshape, and which side the character is facing. it also means it becomes easier to place eyes, ears and the the neck.
most importantly it gives us some consistency.
