I changed my pressure curve and it's made a huge difference. Rendering is not that complex here, but I seriously could not get even simple, smooth gradations like this for months. Never occurred to me the problem might have been with my pressure curve until I saw a thread about it earlier. If you're having trouble painting or rendering, try messing with your settings, it might help.
