Im a bit late to this critique party and dont have much concrete help for you. The only thing i can suggest to you is to achieve an "oily" or "painterly" look it is helpful to practice that separately at first.
Take very simple things, like one apple and paint it with fewer and fewer brush strokes (that ctrl paint temp layer stuff i remember too, it *does* help sometimes, but i think you are right in ditching it for now)
and then try to smudge your opaque fruit study very slightly to make it look like paint was moved around on the canvas.

When i get something painterly looking its mostly by accident and i cant explain what it is that makes that look, but i personally am starting to suspect going 100% opaque ALL THE TIME is not the right thing.

And >>3718013 is showing that even with soft brushes you can achieve a great look.

Anyways, in case that friendly anon that painted over one of my pics is lurking here, i want to show you how i picked up that picture again with your help on the mouth nose and cheek. With that sensual look you gave *him* i tried to preserve it and continued on *her* again lmao
