Essentially. This anon >>6771893 is correct, but let me expand on this a bit:

When you're copying another artist's work, one of your primary objectives is to figure out how that artist solved his problems. Whether it's anatomy, general construction, or composition, every artist is unique because of his own world view and life experiences; as such, you can push your own growth by imitating artists you like with that purpose in mind.

This is why you can never perfectly emulate another artist, but it's simultaneously why you will develop your own style both consciously and unconsciously.
