The idea of mirrors existed before. The idea of non-mirrors also did.
Mirrors that selectively don't act like mirrors is just a synthesis of the two ideas, and has implicitly existed for as long as those two ideas existed, as a possibility of their synthesis.

You can literally invent all ideas by starting with a fundamental thesis (a shape on a blank canvas), then its antithesis (negative space), then repeat the process for the resulting thesis, creating the entire artistic visual language through the dialectical method
