Spent $60 on a 8pack of 8x11 220page sketchbooks off of ebay im disappointed at the rough texture (though thick) paper the books have. Still going to use the fuck out of it but how do get better at identifying wether the paper is rough or smooth be buying?

I believe there's value practicing loomis/Hampton etc. but if you're not also studying it along with Japanese how to draw anime, anime screencaps/manga
etc. books your basically playing yourself in the long run. Loomis can't teach you anime proportions, Hampton can't teach you aesthetic, but they can give you a solid fondation to better understand how the body works and how to draw the figure/gesture in better in different situations, something that noticably glossed over in Japanese books in favor for completed drawing they expect you to learn from.

Grinding is awful for beginners because they're good for getting stuck on drawing X objects X Amount of times when they should be learning construction, observation, and exploration fundamentals through various resources and just completing art because they enjoy creating it. Muscle memory in the only won't teach these and can even result in you learning to draw things incorrectly, and ultimately quieting art when grinding doesn't cut it and your can't understand how to fix your art.

>never picked up a pen in my life
>get some fancy drawing tablet to play rhythm games
>get the brilliant idea to pose some models in blender and trace over them for instant anatomy mastery
>do so
>it still looks like shit
wow you can't just shortcut your way past practicing a skill, who would have thunk it?

Is being really good at art really just about being a good observer?

the amount of salt some of you know-nothing scrubs drop is unreal.
if someone posts some Ruan Jia (whose style you've been trying and failing to copy, of course), will you stop crying? or are you going to keep giving out completely wrong critiques to artists who are 30x better than you?
