If you ever have the opportunity to do something interesting, read the short bit on ideas in David Hume's An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. Hume's a bit of an empiricist so he believes that ideas come from outside of us and are experienced by the senses. This is different from Kant who is a rationalist, who believes that ideas are innate and that we have what he calls an a priori knowledge (knowledge that is independent of experience).

Anyway, Hume contends that there are four ways that ideas arise. Combination (eg unicorn = horse + horn), ↑ and ↓ (eg mountain size) and transposition (eg a horse's hoofs are replaced with claws, for example). Throughout your art career you will encounter a huge number of different artists and by taking on a bit of each of them you develop your own style, which, when correctly assembled like a patchwork beast, can look entirely original.

You can help the process along by downloading all your favourite art and doing master studies and things like that.

Don't worry too much about colours being too dark or too light in digital art. Tools like selective colour (manipulate black), curves (by propping up the darker colours) and threshold can all modify how dark the colours are in PS. However, it's usually a good idea to open a piece of art with a palette you love and figure out what colours you are going to borrow or use until you develop a good colour sense. I usually paint on a medium coloured background and adjust it as I go. There's also specific layer modes you can use to alleviate your bad choice of colours. But try to get the colours right the first time and figure out how your favourite artist uses colours and copy that. My favourites are aquasixio and 零@AR A57 who use a lot of midtones.
