see how he uses line to capture the movement rather than an outline of the form? you aren't contouring or trying to get a 1:1 of your figure, its about the motion. its about drawing the whole figure at once and working your whole page. don't think of it like, okay, so i start with the head, then move to the shoulders, then onto the arms, etc. thats what you want to avoid. notice how he captures a very easily recognizable pose, with very few solid lines? thats the goal. you can go over it later and refine it, but for a gesture all you want is the rhythm. it keeps your final piece from feeling stiff, and creates unity in your figure. if you are working the limbs individually, its painfully obvious because your figures will be stiff and disjointed. focus on the whole rather than the parts.
